While people dream of rapidly shifting from fossil fuel to renewables, in reality the pace is much slower than semiconductors: Energy efficiency doubles every 35 years, vs. 1.5 years with Moore’s Law. Al Gore, Barack Obama, and other leaders should at least read this article.
Also, most people forget that we still do not have a good way to store gigawatts of power. To me, this is the area that requires a big breakthrough, without which renewable energy will remain just an insignificant source of power. This is the main reason I am disappointed with Elon Musk, whom I believe should have invested his talent and drive in finding this breakthrough, instead of wasting everyone’s time with the traditional way of building lithium-ion batteries.
